Loving Vincent
Loving Vincent (2017) is Acadeny Awards nominated first fully painted animated film. It tells the story of painter Vincent van Gogh. It is written and directed by Dorota Kobiela and Hugh Welchman, and is being produced by BreakThru Films and Trademark Films. The development was funded by the Polish Film Institute. The film is being sold by Cinema Management Group and financiers include City of Wrocław, European Capital of Culture in 2016.
Each of the film's 65,000 frames is an oil painting on canvas, using the same technique as Van Gogh, created by a team of 115 painters.
I was one of the painters working on the film.
I joined the project in September 2016. I painted one of the nighttime scenes with Postman and Armond and the credits sequence. I was also involved in painting two of the Armond portrait daytime scenes.
Loving Vincent premiered in Annecy International Animation Film Festival in 2017. During the festival me and two other painters from the film, Piotr Dominiak and Anna Kluza, demonstrated the painting process that was used in the film while animating on a 6-foot long wall installed in an outdoors park. Below is the time-lapse of the process.
